The state of Florida has now entered the drafting phase to pass legislation that would legalize medicinal marijuana for its users throughout the state, according to Orlando's 13 News.

Florida democratic Senator Jeff Clemens from District 27 in Palm Beach County is currently spearheading the effort in drafting a bill that would argue for legalizing medical marijuana in Florida.  The bill, currently being written, is expected to be completed within the next few weeks, 13 News reports.

If the bill is eventually passed, Florida will join the 18 other states throughout the country that allow medical marijuana in one form or another.  Currently, Washington and Colorado are the only two states to fully legalize the substance for recreational consumption.

Like most new bills, the push for legalized medical marijuana has its advocates and detractors.  While this is surely a big step for a group like the Florida Cannabis Action Network, a number of anti-drug organizations don't support the idea.

The Centers for Drug Free Living in Orlando doesn't take a stance on the legality, but feel treatment centers would feel an impact, and not a good one, according to 13 News.

Drugfree.org opposes the prospect of medical marijuana legalization in Florida stating, "In the interest of protecting kids, and based on the perspective of parents, we believe that adding marijuana to the menu of legally available substances and marketed products will make it more likely that kids will use it."

We'll keep you posted as more news arises regarding the legalization of medical marijuana in Florida.
