Well, this is pretty cool.  Come this Saturday, April 21, the Brandon area will finally have a skate park to call its own when an 11,000-square-foot obstacle street and bowl skate park opens at Providence Park East.

The Brandon Skate Park, located at 5720 Providence Road, will host an opening ceremony in conjunction with The Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation department this Saturday.  Officials expect around 300 people for the grand opening including a handful of professionals skaters with Friends of the County Parks providing free hot dogs and drinks.

In addition, there will be skateboarding demonstrations and free admission (continuing throughout the month of April) at the grand opening party which starts at 10 a.m.  After April, skaters will have to pay a $4 admission to enter the park and sign a waiver.  Helmets are always required.

The park features something called a "scary bowl", a handful of easy slopes, and an obstacle street section, all designed by Team Pain, a company owned and operated by skaters that creates custom skate parks for communities worldwide.

According to Hillsborough County officials, the park has a price tag of around $500,000, most of it allocated from impact fees on new construction in the Brandon area and from the county's general revenue.

Monday - Closed

Tuesday through Friday - 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday - 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
