We're now in the midst of the holiday season.  The christmas trees are going up, the lights are coming out, and a ton of holiday food will surely be rife for the taking.  This is prime time for putting on the pounds, so why not focus on getting fit to balance things out.  Here are five great running events in the Tampa Bay area to keep you fit during the holiday season.

Pasco Sheriff's Office Jingle Bell Run, December 3, New Port Richey - Kicking off at the New Port Richey Recreational Center (6630 Van Buren Street New Port Richey, FL). the Jingle Bell Run features a 5k run and one mile family fun run.  Jog through beautiful New Port Richey then enjoy a free pancake breakfast and award ceremony afterward.  Race registration is $25 for the 5k and $10 for the fun run.  Head to the race website for registration and more information.

Jingle Bell Run, December 3, Westshore - Taking place at the HCC Dale Mabry Campus (across from Raymond James Stadium), the Jingle Bell Run will host thousands of Tampa runners as they race to benefit the Arthritis Foundation.  Participants are encouraged to dress up in holiday themed costumes.  Race registration is $25.  For more information, visit the race website.

HALO Jingle Bell 5k Fun Run and Kids Dash, December 10, North Tampa - Head to Hunter's Green Tennis and Athletic Center (18050 Hunter's Oak Court) in North Tampa for a series of runs perfect for the entire family.  This fun run will feature a DJ, awards, food, beverages, and more in the Hunter's Green subdivision.  Proceeds benefit Halo Academy, a school in Tampa dedicated to academic excellence for all children, including those with disabilities.  Registration is $25 for the run and $10 for the kids dash.  For more information, visit the race website.

Florida Holiday Halfathon, December 11, Madeira Beach - This scenic holiday run is not for the faint of fitness heart.  This half marathon (13.1 miles) kicks off at City Hall in Madeira Beach (300 Municipal Drive) and ends at the lakefront at Taylor Park where you can relax, recover, and enjoy food, drink, live music and more.  Free shuttles available to take participants back to their cars at the start.  Registration is $70 until Dec. 3, and $80 until and on race day.  For more information, visit the race website.

Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic, December 17, Clearwater - Enjoy this scenic out and back run over the Memorial Causeway Bridge in Clearwater.  The race kicks off at Coachman Park and will feature a free pancake breakfast, awards ceremony, raffle prizes, and more.  The holiday classic features a 5k, 10k, and one mile fun run.  Pre-registration is $19 for the 5 and 10k and $8 for the one mile.  For more information, visit the race website.
