It's hard to get any more American than a good, old fashioned hot dog.  From the ballparks to the backyard grills, hot dogs are a prevalent culinary staple in America and, likely, aren't going anywhere soon.  What makes a good hot dog though.  Flavor?  Size?  The toppings?  Well, that's up to you, friend.  Here's a list we've composed of some very different, but very great hot dog joints.  In a sense, they're some of the best hot dogs in Tampa.

Mel's Hot Dogs - When many think hot dogs and Tampa, they think Mel's.  Open since 1973, this place has been an institution, an icon even, in the Tampa Bay Area.  A favorite nighttime stop amongst hungry college kids in the area, Mel's  serves up Chicago-style hot dogs made with all beef for a price that won't break the bank.  Enjoy chili dogs, Chicago dogs, bacon cheese dogs, and much more,...dog.

Square One Burgers -  Don't be fooled.  The name says burgers, but the dogs are not too shabby either.  Try the Okie Dog topped with housemade Southwestern Angus chili, sharp cheddar cheese and chopped red onion, served on a hoagie bun; or the SRQ Dog with red-pepper relish, avocado, Monterey Jack cheese and red onions, served on a hoagie bun.

Frankie's - Frankie's describes themselves as the gourmet of fast food.  If there's a more heavenly combination of two food categories please, tell us now.   Their extra-long, half-pork, half-beef dogs are fried then grilled and served with a wide variety of topping options.  Go for the Mexican with chili or the Italian with peppers and onions, it's up to you!

Campbell's Dairyland - Open since 1985, Campbell's has been serving up old-fashioned ice cream, sandwiches, and, of course, hot dogs to Brandon residents for over 25 years.  Try their chili dog topped with secret-recipe chili created by the founder, Boyd Campbell.

BurgerMonger - Another place you shouldn't be fooled by.  Sure it says "Burger" in the title, but the dogs are quite the hit, apparently.  They take it to a whole 'nother level with quarter-pound hot dogs made of 100% USDA, above-prime, kobe beef.  Try one topped with their kobe beef chili, cheddar cheese, and/or onion slaw.

To us, these are some of the best hot dogs in Tampa.  Explore our awesome city and discover yours today!
