For this week's taste tour we ventured out to the Brandon area to try out one of the newest sandwich shops in the area, Pappy's Subs.

Pappy's is a small, almost hole in the wall type shop at the River Hills Plaza strip mall specializing in a variety of subs, hamburgers, hotdogs, wings, soups, salads, beer and wine.

Walking in on a barren Wednesday for lunch, it looked like Pappy's could definitely use a little more patronage.  The setting was nice - TVs throughout the dining area, Golden Tee Golf to play while you wait, old signs on the walls - just a little short on the actual people.

Set some time aside if you're dining there.  Even though we were the only two in the restaurant, our food took surprisingly long to come out, much longer than any comparable fast-casual sandwich place.

I'll admit, the wait was worth it.  One of their most popular sandwich, the filet mignon sandwich ($10.99), was a drool-worthy work of deliciousness; chunks of tender, seasoned filet with grilled mushrooms and onions then topped with the cheese of your choice.  It's like a Philly cheese steak on high-grade steroids.

Pappy's take on the Cuban ($8.99) was also pretty admirable.  A respectable inch, maybe inch and half, stack of ham, roast pork, salami, swiss, pickles, and Cuban sauce between two pressed pieces of Cuban bread.  Ours came slightly cold in the center, but the taste was enough to make it forgivable.  Definitely not the best Cuban you can get in Tampa, but a respectable one.

Their house-made chips that come with every sandwich are a nice touch and come cooked to a perfect golden brown with a small kiss of salt. Overall, Pappy's has a few kinks to iron out (what new restaurant doesn't?), but they definitely has what it takes to succeed.
