When it comes to Mexican food in the Tampa Bay area, saying you've got a wide variety to choose from is almost an understatement.  Mexican Restaurants in Tampa run the gamut from cheap, but all-too-often delicious hole in the wall joints to upscale Mexican restaurants.

If there's one overall thing Ybor City's newest Mexican restaurant Tequilas succeeds at, though, is balancing this affordability with an upscale flavor that's sure to leave both your palate and wallet satisfied.

Tequilas resides in the former, spacious location of the Full Moon Saloon at 7th Avenue and 17th Street in Ybor.  High ceilings, plenty of indoor space, and an expansive outdoor patio all seem like beneficial ingredients to make Tequilas a success.

But, food is the main focus when it comes to Taste Tour of 813.  And, judging from our lunch experience at Tequilas today, this casual Mexican concept could nearly shine for its food alone.

The small menu features an assortment of appetizers, tacos, burritos, entrees, and more.  There's a nice spread between traditional favorites and more modern interpretations, including their Papas Carne Asada, fries topped with grilled pork, guacamole, and a layer of melted cheese.  This huge appetizer was enough to feed a table of five and touted a gut-busting balance of carbs, flavorful meat and cheeses you can't really help but gorge upon.

Carnitas, or roasted pork, is a recurring ingredient throughout Tequilas' menu, and for good reason.  Their take on the carnitas burrito is a greased-up, drip-down-your-forearm delight packed with soft spiced pork, house-made guacamole, and a hint of cilantro and lime that surprises you with its delicious simplicity.

The Cuban restaurants are aplenty, but Ybor could definitely benefit from a solid Mexican restaurant in its lineup.  Judging from this experience, Tequilas could easily fit the bill.
