Gaspar’s Grotto hosts a spirited celebration honoring National Tequila Day on Thursday, July 23, that features premium spirits and noted authorities on agave products. (Note: The official observance of National Tequila Day is July 24 but why wait?).
The ”Hecho En Mexico,” or “Made in Mexico,” festival offers tastings of select premium tequilas, mezcals and more from 7 - 10 p.m. July 23.
“Gaspar’s Grotto is an institution in Ybor City. Its two huge patios and insider grotto feature a wide selection of dining and nightlife options. And it’s the scene for the Glorious Spirits’ presentation of world class spirits produced in Mexico,” according to Glorious Spirits (http://gloriousspirits.com/), the event organizer.
In addition to enjoying dozens of high-end, made-in-Mexico spirits, guests will sample special hors d’oeuvres, enjoy music by Tampa’s Latin Quarter, be able to bid on silent auction items and help to determine the People’s Choice winner of the Glorious Spirits Made in Mexico 2015 Cocktail Challenge Tampa FL.
German Gonzalez, a master distiller for T1 Tequila Uno and Tears of Liorona, will be at Gaspar’s Grotto for the tasting event. Considered to be one of the best master tequileros alive, Gonzalez is the great grandson of General Manuel Gonzalez, former president of Mexico from 1880-1884. In the late 1970s, his father, Guillermo Gonzalez Diaz Lombardo, launched what would become the first ultra-premium tequila imported into the U.S., Chinaco.
Gonzalez worked closely with his father to learn how to handcraft tequila using traditional techniques. After years serving as Chinaco’s master distiller, he left the company to launch his own brands, T1 Tequila Uno and Tears of Llorona.
Joining Gonzalez will be Jim Lannon, a resident of Pinellas Park who promotes agave spirits throughout Florida. The former executive chef and bar manager from New Jersey has a Facebook page titled “TotallyTequila (Tampa Bay)” that is dedicated to “anything and everything related to all 100% de agave spirits (https://
