Well, someone's looking out for commuters in the Tampa Bay area this holiday season.  According to local gas price monitoring site tampagasprices.com, "at least" one gas station in the Tampa Bay area is offering gas for less than $3 a gallon.

The site reports that Excel Fuel, located in St. Petersburg at at 6201 54th Ave. N., is currently selling a gallon of regular gasoline for $2.99.

Across the board, the average price for a gallon of gas in Tampa is currently $3.21, a steady improvement from last month's average price of $3.25 and a barely noticeable change from the $3.22 average at this time last year.

Gas price analyst cite simple supply and demand as the cause of this steady dip in gas prices over the past few months.  The supply is ample, with most U.S. oil refineries working at nearly 90 percent capacity.

The demand for gas is down, though, both here in the U.S. and internationally, something analysts believe will stimulate and benefit more travelling by automobile this holiday season.

AAA expects about 93 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more from home by car this holiday season, the busiest holiday travel season the company has witnessed in six years.
