The legendary Tampa Theatre may just be one of the best historic landmarks in Tampa, but that's not stopping this independent cinema from adapting to the modern age with hopes of a new, digital projector system.

Opened in 1926, this 86-year-old theatre in the heart of Downtown Tampa has been showing films very much the same way they have since their inception, but if Tampa Theatre officials get their way, this longstanding movie hub in Tampa could be outfitted with a new, digital projection system by the end of the year, according to ABC Action News.

To do this, the city-owned Tampa Theatre needs to raise $150,000 by this end of year deadline.

While film purists say the new, digital format lacks the depth and warmth of traditional film, many have praised the new format for its improved sound, reliability, and convenience.  With the new system, the Tampa Theatre won't have to waste thousands of dollars in yearly shipping costs to bring in new films.

In addition, many of the small independent films that would be shown at the Theatre are switching to the new, digital format as well.

The Tampa Theatre will likely depend on its usual system of public fundraisers and ticket sales to raise the money required for the new, digital projection system.  We'll keep you posted as more news arises.
