National Tequila Day is Friday, July 24th and we're giving our readers the inside scoop on the best places to celebrate in Tampa. Although the origins of this day are unclear, do we really need an excuse to celebrate?  Pass the salt and lime, please!

But first, a little Tequila primer to help put you in the spirit.

Tequila is a distilled beverage made from the fermented juice of the Blue Agave plant and water. In order for a spirit to be officially called Tequila, it must be made in Mexico.

There are three basic categories of Tequilas: Blanco, Reposado and Anejo. Blanco Tequila is the Blue Agave spirit in its' purest form.  Blanco Tequilas are unaged, creating a clear color and an earthy, peppery taste.

Reposado or "rested" Tequila is Blanco Tequila that has been aged in oak barrels of any size from two months to one year.  The resting allows the Tequila to pick up some of the wood's natural flavor and color and produces a more mellowed taste.  Anejo Tequila is aged a minimum of one year but less than three years in small oak barrels. The extended resting period gives Anejo Tequilas an amber color and a rich oak flavor.

Thanks to eatdivide.com, here are a few more Tequila fun facts: You can turn Tequila into diamonds; Only the Agave heart is used to make Tequila;
It takes an agave plant 8 years to reach maturity and Tequila is not a depressant like most other alcohols!
