It’s no secret that we are in the midst of unprecedented and frightening times. A time that most of us never imagined could happen. With non-essential businesses forced to close their doors to the public, millions of workers have been furloughed, resulting in a record high of unemployment claims. With the number of unemployed workers rising daily, we put together a guide that will make filing for unemployment in Tampa Bay as seamless as possible.

Find out if You Qualify

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity has set guidelines on who qualifies for unemployment benefits in regards to COVID-19.

  • Those who have been ordered to quarantine by medical professionals or a government agency
  • Those who have been laid off or furloughed by their employer due to COVID-19
  • Those who are caring for immediate family members infected with COVID-19

Gather Required Documents

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity requires that you have several personal and professional related documents in order to apply. Having all of these documents available and in order will help when it comes time to enter in this information.

The following information is required:

  • Social Security number
  • Drivers license or state ID number
  • Comprehensive list of employers for the past 18 months
  • Each Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN, found on any W2 or 1099 form)
  • First and last dates of work
  • Gross earnings (before taxes)
  • Reason for separation
  • Military or Federal employee identification (if applicable)

Log on to the States Website

In order to file, you will have to use the CONNECT website, which is Florida’s Online Reemployment Assistance System. Once online, you'll be asked to create a login and PIN number.

Begin Filing Process

Once you are logged in to the website, there will be a File a New Claim link. Once you click on the link, you can begin answering the required personal and professional related questions using the information that you previously gathered. Once you have answered all of the questions, be sure to review your submission and check for accuracy.

Finalizing and Submitting Application

Once you have completed the application and pressed submit, it will have to be reviewed to determine whether or not you qualify. Be advised that the Department of Economic Opportunity is receiving a high number of applicants which is resulting in longer wait times. If you need help filing or have questions about your application you can call 1-800-681-8102, which is taking calls 7 days a week.
