Join of us for an explosive night of volcano science at St. Pete Brewing Company! Who knew we had so many volcanologists in Florida, let alone right in our own Tampa backyards? Tonight is your opportunity to learn everything volcano related from our expert lineup of speakers, including Elisabeth Gallant, Dr. Steve McNutt, and Dr. Glenn Thompson. You won't want to miss this event!

Speakers include:
Elisabeth Gallant: Modelling lava flow hazards
Volcanic hazards come in a variety of forms (lava inundation, ash fall, pyroclastic flows, lahars, etc.). This talk will include a brief history of volcanic hazard assessment and will focus on the mitigation of lava flow hazards through field examination and computer simulations.

Prof. Steve McNutt: Volcanic Lightning
Lightning occurs in some volcanic ash clouds, and may form one component of an eruption warning system. This talk will review recent ideas about the processes that cause electrification and lightning at volcanoes, and preliminary results from experiments at Sakurajima Volcano in Japan.

Dr. Glenn Thompson
Dr. Glenn Thompson will talk on volcano-seismic monitoring in Montserrat. Specifically how monitoring the volcanic earthquakes, tremor, swarms helped during the early stages of the Montserrat eruption, and then how he and colleagues re-tooled the seismic monitoring programme to focus on hazardous pyroclastic flows, lahars, dome collapses - the stuff that actually kills people. His talk will have more of a "hands-on" practical focus since a volcano observatory operations room is more similar to an air traffic control tower than it is to research at a university.
