We organize accessible science events in all of your favorite hangouts!
Join us at Southern Brewing to learn how science helps protect us everyday! The evening will cover topics such as the science and technology currently used by our armed forces, advances in using genetics to solve crimes, what are exoplanets, and a first person perspective on transitioning from a U.S. Army Sergeant to an academic career. We are pleased to announce our panel of experts, including Jaclyn Angelo, Bruce Jamison, and William Evonosky. This is an evening you won't want to miss!
*Also, be sure to bring your appetite because Jaffa street will be on location with delicious Mediterranean food available for purchase!*
Speakers include:
Jaclyn Angelo: Forensic Serology and DNA
Discuss the type of evidence brought in to a crime lab, how serology testing can help locate potential sources of DNA, and what is involved in developing a DNA profile.
Capt. Bruce Jamison: Title TBD
I'm an Air Force pilot for the KC-135. Our primary mission is aerial refueling, which means we transfer gas between airplanes while flying. I'll start with the history and science behind aerial refueling, then I'll talk about why it's important and some of the distinct advantages it gives the military. I'll finish up with a few war stories and a short Q&A session.
William Evonosky: Military to academia: from rigitidy to creativity
Going from U.S. Army Sergeant to budding academic has been a long and often uncertain path but the journey has led to some of the greatest experiences of my life. In this talk I plan to describe what it is like to go from the rigidity of the military to the creativity of academia where the very nature of the job is to describe the unknown. I will also spend half the talk describing the new and exciting field of exoplanets and what we stand to learn from them.
