Here in 2021, French neo-Ballardian director Julia Docournau just won the Palme d’Or for Titane, a candy-dipped nightmare of a movie about a woman who gets impregnated by a car. But back in 2016, audiences were just learning about her particular brand of intimate, intense body horror.
Stringent vegetarian Justine (Garance Marillier) encounters a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world during her first week at veterinary school. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her principles and eats raw meat for the first time. She soon finds that the flesh has awakened something in her. Something awful.
