Description

Join Powerstories Theatre for its final performance at its Kennedy Blvd. location - Girls in the Boat - a play inspired by the true stories of the U.S. women’s Olympic rowing team.

Event Details

In 1975, the women’s rowing team at Yale University protested to the athletic department for equality in conditions and funding in women's collegiate sports, eventually drawing national attention to their situation, and the need for gender equality. This and the “Title IX” protest is the background of Alice Austen’s play, Girls in the Boat, debuting at Powerstories.

Playwright Alice Austen said that the characters are all different, with different political views and reasons for rowing.

"This is not a saccharine, girly play. It's a play about real people. Rowing is the ultimate team sport. You have to work together all the time. You can't sort of go off on your own and be a star, it's the boat. And all of that is as important as winning but winning is important. And that's a message I think too often that we don't give girls. It was also important to me to get across the idea of people, people — not just girls, working together in the same boat who don't necessarily agree — towards a common purpose, because I think that's a message that we as Americans can all use right now."

Girls in the Boat is April 20-May 7 at Powerstories Theatre. Tickets are $30 adult, $25 student, seniors, military. Get tickets at https://powerstories.ticketleap.com/boat/t/GITB
