1 month ago UT becomes Florida’s first university to be ACJS certified
BY FALON FISCHER UT’s criminology and criminal justice department was awarded the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) certification for its undergraduate program on Feb. 17. According to ACJS website, UT is now the first college in Florida to become ACJS certified. The award was received by Kathryn Branch, chair and associate professor of criminology and criminal justice, and Sorle Diih, assistant professor of criminology, during the ACJS meeting in New Orleans which took place on Feb. 13-17. “We were working for a year and a half looking at our program compared to the standards they were looking for,” Branch said. “A lot of faculty worked on this Dr. Diih and also Dr. Capsambelis, we had to review every course, every syllabus, every faculty member every single piece of our program and what is offered.” The ACJS is an international organization that fosters professional and scholarly activities in the field of criminal justice. There is not a lot to complain about when it comes to the University of Tampa. Coming in, I was skeptical about the small school and having a true college experience. It was definitely a relief to see how great the college involved each student and really personalized my experience - I have no regrets! The students, while from all over the world, are all super nice and welcoming and so are the professors. Not only do they make you have a great experience, but being located in the lovely Downtown Tampa is also a great part. Having the perfect Florida beaches near by and the fast-paced life of the city surrounding you there is no limits to your fun! Also being in Downtown provides each student tons of opportunities to gain first-hand experience in the working world and meet great people.

Pros: Small class size, familiarity on campus, amazing location, diverse population, great career/intership opportunities, & loads of involvement opportunites.

Cons: Cafeteria hours & lack of student parking on actual campus.
