Event Details
As the final Wind Ensemble concert before he retires, "Recollections" will be presented at the University of South Florida School of Music under the baton of esteemed Professor of Conducting and Director of Bands, Dr. John C. Carmichael.
The music performed at this concert will have special career significance for Dr. Carmichael and will also be very meaningful to the audience. The program includes Jupiter from the Planets by Gustav Holst, a featured selection from the Lakeland High School wind ensemble’s first performance at the Midwest Clinic in 1982, as well as Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger, the first significant wind band work conducted by Dr. Carmichael. Other selections include a pivotal work highlighted in Carmichael’s Ph.D. dissertation, Konzertmusik fur Blasorchester by Paul Hindemith, and Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral by Richard Wagner, a work that signifies the beginning of a new life adventure. A particularly significant selection will be Concerto for Saxophone and Wind Ensemble by Paul Creston; perhaps a last major collaboration between father and son, SFC Matthew Carmichael of Pershing’s Own Army Band.
This will be wonderful event to attend along with the many friends, supporters, and former students from Dr. Carmichael’s career of more than 44 years in music education and conducting. We encourage you not to miss this very special final concert.
