Description
This three-day workshop is designed for psychologists and psychiatrists who evaluate criminal defendants in Florida courts.
Event Details
The focus of the program is evaluation of defendants’ 1) competence to proceed (stand trial) and 2) mental state at the time of the alleged offense (sanity). Other types of criminal forensic evaluations are not addressed. This workshop begins at 8:30am each day and ends at 5:00pm with the exception of Saturday (3:30pm). Please note that registration begins at 8:00am.
With respect to general forensic mental health evaluation relevant rules of evidence, the role of examining mental health professionals, ethical obligations, and strategies for report writing and testimony are discussed. For both competence to proceed and mental state at the time of the alleged offense, the Constitutional and Florida law shaping the inquiries is reviewed, followed by a discussion of evaluation approaches. Although professionals other than psychiatrists may find this program of interest, potential participants are cautioned that Florida Statutes 916 directs that, whenever possible, psychiatrists and psychologists conduct competence to proceed and sanity evaluations via court order.
