Well, this is pretty cool.  If you’re not booked this Saturday, September 24 and looking for some free things to do in Tampa make some time to check out a few of these cool museums participating in Free Museum Day sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine.

Henry B. Plant Museum – Save on the regular $10 admission price and check out the Plant Museum for free.  Check out the “Henry Plant: King of Florida” exhibit and learn how Tampa blossomed from a small village to one of the largest cities in Florida with the help of Henry Plant.  The museum building itself is a rich piece of Tampa history harkening back to the gilded age with an architectural style that’s pretty magnificent.

Tampa Bay History Center – Dive into 12,000 years of Tampa history and artifacts at the Tampa Bay History Center in Channelside.  Learn about the people and places that have shaped the Tampa Bay area into what it is today and the interesting stories that got them here.

Tampa Museum of Art – If you haven’t check out the new Tampa Museum of Art, you’re missing out.  Meander through this 66,000 square foot mecca of visual art and feast your eyes on a variety of different traveling exhibitions, and contemporary as well as classic art.  Their newest exhibit, “Worlds Apart” draws from the museums vast antiques collection and explores a variety of the cultures of antiquity through these works.

Ybor City Museum State Park – Housed in the historic, near century-old Fertila Bakery, the Ybor City Museum outlines the fascinating evolution of Historic Ybor City in a way no person or book could ever tell you.  You’ve really got to see it for yourself.  Afterward, grab some to-go at any great Ybor City restaurant and have yourself a picnic in the neighboring park.

Florida Museum of Photographic Arts – If you’re a photo buff, check out the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Downtown Tampa and study what makes great photographs, well, great photographs.   Many outline the rich history of Florida while others are contemporary and inventive.  View ‘em all for free on this special day.

If you’re looking for free things to do in Tampa or just bored on Saturday, September 24, check out these Tampa museums and maybe learn a little about art and our great city.
