Pursuing a career in personal training in Tampa Bay is an exciting decision. The hardest part may be figuring out what to do next. Starting any career takes dedication, hard work and more rejection than success.  With a little creativity, business intellect and willingness to learn, you will be on your way to an exciting new career in personal training!

Kara Stewart, a nationally certified personal trainer in Tampa Bay, recently shared some advice for those interested in becoming personal trainers. Below are some of the points she had to offer:

Everyone starts somewhere, clients and trainers. If your long-term goal is to have your own practice, you must consider short-term practicality. Kara Stewart began as a personal trainer at Shapes Fitness for Women where she learned a lot about the field. When you start on a smaller scale, not only is there less risk, but also you can assess what qualities you want to take with you once you leave. You may even decide that being apart of a corporate gym is the right fit for you.

Work it! Take as many workshops as possible. Check out seminars, events and master classes offered for personal trainers, group fitness instructors and nutritionists. The wider range of knowledge you have, the more diverse clients you will be able to assist. Workshops will also help you to become specialized in a particular area.

Build a client base. This is one of the most challenging parts of starting your career as a personal trainer. You will need patience and excellent communication skills while building your client base. Stewart built up her client base during her time working at Shapes. Along with contacts from her Arbonne business and working with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders, Stewart has now established herself in Tampa as one of the most reputable trainers in the area.

Certification is key. Becoming a nationally certified personal trainer will help you build a client base. These days a simple certification requires nothing more than a printer and a few hours on the computer, none of which indicate an actual understanding of personal training. In order to acquire the skills necessary to begin a lucrative career, you need the proper foundation.

Work with a personal trainer. It is hard to offer the best possible service if you don’t know what your clients should expect. When working with a personal trainer, be aware. Taking note on how your trainer exercises, interacts with clients and deals with any conflicts or issues that arise will help you in your business.
