The Macdill Airfest, one of the largest shows in our country's Department of Defense, might be a bit different, and more comfortable, this year. Instead of its classic, late March date, officials at the Macdill Air Force Base have scheduled the 2011 Airfest for November 5th and 6th, 2011.

For us, this seems great. If you’ve ever been on the base during a hot month like March, you know how hot the big, open, exposed space can get; all the more enhanced by the blistering heat coming off the miles of asphalt.

Early November is prime for great Florida weather and veterans will surely respect the Airfest’s closeness to the November 11th Veterans Day holiday as well.

So what can we expect for Airfest 2011?

First and foremost, the Thunderbirds. An Airfest staple, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are a 5 plane, fighter jet stunt group that's been around for over 50 years performing jaw-droppingly awesome formations and synchronized stunts at Air Force fests across the country just like Macdill’s. This year’s Airfest should be no exception.

The United States Special Operations Command will also be there showcasing their jump team creating dazzling aerial formations in the sky all while free falling at terminal velocity.

Expect many other military and civilian aerial demonstrations as well with more announcements coming as the date of the Airfest gets closer.

And, as always, be sure to explore beautiful South Tampa while you’re in the area. Rife with unique restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and more, South Tampa is a great locale to gear up for the fest or unwind with a tall drink and some good friends afterward.
